Cheney Clamps and a couple of 'bodges'

Having the pipes in, it's time to replace hoses.  Most of the hoses had the original Cheney clamps leading me to think that most of the hoses are 50 years old!   While there are reproduction Cheney's the originals are quite sought after, they were used on vintage Ferrari's and this ad's Ferrari 'tax' on top of the Jaguar 'tax'.

The first picture is of the Temperature sender wire, at some point a new sender was installed with a different connector so the installer just tied a clip on the end of the old wire, not a big deal but might have lead to erroneous readings.

Cheney Clamp on the bottom, the upper clamp has a hex head where as the Cheney has a 'cheese head' common screwdriver slot

Aside from the hex head, notice the aftermarket clamp has the slots cut all the way through

Cheney clamps  are marked Cheney, the aftermarket version is also marked Cheney however the style/size of the font is incorrect on the larger clamps IIRC.

I guess I took this picture as the before picture but didn't get around to cleaning this today, will clean it up and repaint with the correct Hammertone paint.

Just a picture of one of the new hoses attached to the new pipes.

Bodge number 2! NO THERMOSTAT! This bodge shows a complete misunderstanding of the E Type's cooling system.  Often these cars have an issue with overheating for one reason or another and someone comes along and thinks they'll solve the problem by removing that troublesome/restrictive thermostat valve.  This may work on some cars but not on Jaguars, what the pointer is 'pointing' to in this picture is the bypass passage opening that redirects the coolant back to the radiator,  this is normally open only when the engine is cold, when the engine warms up a foot on the thermostat comes back and closes it off forcing all the coolant into the engine passages.   In the absence of the thermostat the flow is split and only a fraction of the coolant goes into the engine, the rest just gets caught in an endless loop (slightly simplified but....)

A good shot of my tool cabinet ;-)
Well that's it for today, should be getting a parts shipment from SNG soon then will dig into the front suspension.

  1. Wow, no thermostat. The new fans, pipes, hoses, thermostat and cleaned out radiator are going to put the cooling system in tip top shape. The Coolcats are wonderful. I never ran my 69 with the original fans and put Coolcats in right away.

    1. Hi Drew, sure hope so! I lucked out with the thermostat as I have one in my parts supply. Even with Mike Franks list of compatible/alternative thermostats I couldn't find the correct 'footed' thermostat here. I discovered that it has the same one as the V12.
I hope Jennifer is half as excited as I am at how her car is turning out.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Cheers,
