Little steps, hood weather stripping and steering wheel

Hello Folks,

A slow day in the garage, other chores and appointments got in the way, suspect that tomorrow and Thursday will be the same-sorry....

Finished the hood weatherstripping today.

Finished sanding the steering wheel this morning and have been applying coats of 'spar varnish' to it this afternoon.  The instructions read that a new coat must be applied within 1.5 hours of wait 72 hours, I'm on #5 with # 6 coming up in a little bit.

Have been looking through some of my stuff and I think I might have enough hoses for the brakes and cooling system, Yeah!

Well folks, that about it for today, thanks for your interest and I'll try to pick up the pace.
Cheers,

Lynn

"Finding Beauty Under Many Layers"....

This seems like a great lead in to the blog today. Had the pleasure of having Jennifer and Jason come out this afternoon, it turns out that Jennifer is also a children's author and knowing that we have Grandchildren she gave us several of her books!  Thank you Jennifer! I'll read them first....
Notice anything different?  I received the clock back from Mike Eck yesterday, he does very nice work!

The cleaned and painted radiator, have discussed upgrading the fans  to the CoolCat fans from Mike Frank, Jennifer has had repeated episodes of fans failing so we will get those ordered.
Cleaned off the brittle weather stripping from the hood (top) and installed the new seal

New seal glued in place, need to do the other side now.

I can see why Jennifer had a cover on the wheel, lots of splinters that needed fixing.  I've removed the finish and getting ready to apply a new finish, just a bit more sanding.

Well, that's it for today.  Hope ya'll had a good Memorial Day Weekend.

Cheers,
Lynn

Radiator, jacking block.... "It takes a Village"*

 Evening Ya'll,
Today worked on cleaning, fixing and painting the radiator and fan shroud.  The small vent nipple broke off yesterday while I was removing the hose likely because I was pulling to hard plus 50 years plus it didn't look like it was soldered well.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  At any rate I cleaned it up and re-soldered it.  Then cleaned the radiator inside and outside and painted it.  Along with the fan shroud I think they will look better and I think the radiator will work better sans grasshoppers.

Then on to one of my pet peeves, carelessly inflicted damage to the car from jacking it up.  Terry, one of my Buddies cut me some black walnut inserts to fit in the groove under the front 'picture' frame.  I've always wondered why Jaguar didn't do something like this from the factory, even welding a piece of flat steel in there would have given some protection.

Damaged frame rail, notice the drivers side horn.  I'll fix that before the car goes home

After straightening, not perfect but a lot better.

Now with a hardwood jacking point, black walnut no less.
Radiator and fans before separation, soldering, cleaning and paint.

Cleaned, fixed and painted

Fan shroud painted with wrinkle paint, will look a lot better.

Hope you all have a pleasant and thoughtful Memorial Weekend!

New Brake hoses, misc stuff

Evening folks,

Yesterday I felt like I was really cooking but today it just didn't go quite as well. Started the day with finishing the transmission fluid change, used Redline MT90 which has worked very well in the cars I've used it in.  After I finished filling the transmission I sealed it up and then installed the carpet over the opening.  Then proceeded to to replace the brake hoses and one thing lead to another as I had to remove the radiator to gain access to the fittings for the hoses.  I needed to remove the hoses anyway and I'll get the radiator and fan shroud repainted.  Will probably take the radiator to the shop to get it checked out and flushed.
Also checked the clutch slave cylinder and found it to be leaking, interestingly it was a 'hydrostatic' cylinder* which was used for a relatively short period of time and is no longer available IIRC.  Supposedly the hydrostatic cylinder should have 3/4inch play but there is no way this one could have that much freeplay.  Since it will need to be replaced anyway  I'll address it with the new non-hydrostatic cylinder.

Nifty feature of these cars is the ability to tip the bonnet up to 90 degrees and get it out of the way.

Years of grime, did keep the Cheney clamps looking like new, i.e. after considerable cleaning.

The upper radiator hose fitting, lot's of crystals....

I've noticed that all the gators on the ball joints and tie rods are MIA, I'm thinking that replacing them and the bushings might be added to the winter project list if Jennifer wants to get them squared away.

Furry?

Interesting piece found on the radiator fan motor, these are very fragile and not often seen

Judging by the corrosion on the spark plugs, they've been there for a long, long time.

New rear flexible brake line hose

A bit grimy on the differential with a drip forming, will change the differential fluid but hoping I won't have to get into this.

Cheney Clamps after cleaning, they look pretty good after cleaning.

Will be taking this apart and paint it up, I think it would be a good idea to have the radiator cleaned up and checked for leaks.

Cheers,
Lynn
*It may be that it's a standard clutch slave cylinder installed as a hydrostatic (which is what this car would have come with) without the return spring.

Pillows be gone!

Evening Ya'll,

Well, Jennifer I think you can throw away the pillows now, Glory Be!
I was only able to put in a couple of hours today because of ADL's* but I was able to reinstall the seats.  I was concerned that the new seats would stand out like a sore thumb but was pleasantly surprised-you be the judge.

Thus far I'm quite pleased with the quality of the seat covers from this company.

Will see what tomorrow brings but the glamorous stuff is over for a few days.  I'm draining the transmission fluid and noticed it looked pretty nasty, wonder if it's original Jaguar oil?
Will replace it with Redline MT 90 and check the clutch play tomorrow.

That's All Folks!

Cheers,
Lynn

Reassembly 2

Evening folks,

Well today was an exciting day, for about 90 seconds I was the high bidder on BAT for a '67 FHC.  I was certain that I was going to be making a trip down to see my friends in Austin next week but alas it was not to happen, I was close but it was just a skosh over my limit.
On another note nothing makes you feel as productive as a day putting clean parts back on a car your working on!
The completed pedal box installed, so much easier to rebuild it on the bench and then install and my back liked this approach too!

Windscreen washer bottle getting a new strap, a lot better IMO than bailing wire

Ah, the completed pedal box with cleaned carpet behind, it had been soaked in brake fluid from the leaky master cylinder but washed up nicely with mild carpet cleaner, not quite as black as before but won't be noticeable without really looking hard, i.e. having your head down in the foot well.

Washer bottle

What do you see new here?  The brake and clutch bottles are installed-temp.  The battery tray is back in place.

Installing the radio console, this is a royal PITA as it has to be installed so the center dash will open. Why does it need to open you ask?  Because if one burns out a fuse this is where they live plus I have to be able to get in there to install the dash top.

Closed....

Open!

Well that's it for today, if I have time tomorrow-appointments and what not- I may try to install the seats.  Not sure how that's going to go as it's very tight and they have chewed up the vinyl before, just hoping that with a little TLC they will fit without dragging on the vinyl.

That's All Folks*,

Cheers,
Lynn

Reassembly!

Evening Ya'll,

10 bonus points if you can identify the first picture, that reminded me, no one ever commented on the bodge I alluded to in one of the 'Door' posts.  Well if you look closely at the picture of the reassembled passenger door you might see a little silver dot- I had to use a screw to hold the warped door panel in so that it wouldn't foul the window winder handle.

Answer below :-)

Reassembling the pedal box, a lot easier to do on the bench than from the inside of the car. can anyone see the modification?
It's not a bodge if it's an improvement-right?

Pedal box installed with the master cylinders installed prior to mounting the pedal box.

New "Slave Master Cylinder" installed

Pedal box from underneath, still need to tighten a couple of nuts

Refurbished center console

Also reassembled the heater box, will install it pretty soon too,  trying to decide if I want to do the heater pipes and that is a big chore.  The car was essentially built up around the heater pipes and getting them out and replaced with new ones takes a lot of time and words that one shouldn't use in public.

That's All Folks,

Lynn
