Head and cleaning.

Evening folks,

Picked up the head from the machinist today, I'm really impressed with how fast the turnaround was but was concerned that they said they had to remove 0.019" from the head to get rid of the warp.  I was concerned that this would alter the alignment of the cams but after talking with my experts today the consensus was that it would be OK.  Several of my reference sources agreed with Des Hammil's book suggesting that 0.060 could be removed without ill effect.  My secondary concern was that this could throw the camshafts out of alignment but after checking the alignment with my straight edge I'm comfortable that they were well under the maximum.

Still waiting for the flywheel to be finished but am waiting for parts so not a major concern yet.  This allows me to take a little time to clean parts for the eventual reassembly.

The resurfaced head

Disassembled the idler pulley assembly and greased the bearings, the alternator has been cleaned in anticipation of disassembly and refurbishment.
The block, ready for painting, almost ;-)

Not much else to report, placed an order with SNG today and with Coventry West for the gaskets we'll need.

Cheers,
Lynn

  1. Wow, that is fast turn around time on the surfacing. Looks good to me. :-) The idler pulley cleaned up nicely and the new lube makes it's good for thousands more miles. Well done. The alternator looks great too. I wish I had my original alternator (I think). Can't wait to see the painted block.

    1. Thanks Drew, Did you replace your Lucas with an AC Delco? As you likely recall that's what I did with mine to simplify things in the event I had an issue in some remote place. I don't think it looks as nice as the OEM but I kept the Lucas (as you know) and if and when I get tired of the appearance of the Delco unit I'll swap it back. Did a little more cleaning on the block today, cleaned it with prep solution then coated it with 'Evaporust' (type product). When I get the POR15 I should be ready to paint it. In the meantime waiting for parts.
      Thanks for your comment!
      Cheers,

    2. I put in a new AC11 from SNG Barratt and it' worked fine. I actually bought two and keep the other as a spare for the tours.

Have you ever cleaned the cooling system with Evaporust as it mentions on the container? I am tempted to do that someday although I think a regular flush and new coolant works for years.

    3. Hi Drew,
Nope, can't say that I have. Don't know anything about 'evaporust', the stuff I used on the block is something i got from NAPA that is more like a primer that chemically change the rust (or so they say).
      Cheers,
